New Zealand issues a Student Visa (or Fee Paying Student Visa) managed by Immigration New Zealand (INZ). The application is submitted online through INZ's Visa Online portal. New Zealand has a relatively straightforward process but requires medical and police certificates.

Apply to a New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA)-registered institution

Academic recordsTranscripts & certificates from SLC to latest — certified English copies

NZ institutions accept certified copies. For documents in Nepali, provide an English translation certified by a registered translator. NZQA credential evaluations may be required for non-standard qualifications.

IdentificationValid passport — all pages

Must be valid for the full duration of your study period. NZ Immigration also checks passport history for previous visa refusals.

Student Visa Application (INZ)

Apply online through INZ after receiving your Offer of Place

AdmissionOffer of Place letter from a New Zealand NZQA-registered institution

The offer letter must state: program name, start/end dates, tuition fees, and conditions. For courses longer than 3 months, a Student Visa is required.

FinancialNZD 15,000–25,000/year proof (tuition + NZD 15,000 living costs)

INZ requires evidence of NZD 15,000/year for living costs plus full tuition fees. Use bank statements from an NRB 'A' class Nepal bank or a scholarship letter. Education loan sanction letters are accepted.

MedicalMedical certificate via eMedical — from an INZ-approved panel physician

Students staying more than 12 months must complete an upfront medical exam. Use an INZ-approved panel physician in Nepal. The examination is uploaded directly to INZ via eMedical. CIWEC Clinic in Kathmandu is INZ-approved.

PoliceNepal Police character certificate + NZ police certificate

Nepal Police character certificate from the district police office. NZ police certificate (for any country you've lived in for 12+ months). Both required for courses longer than 24 months.

InsuranceTravel & health insurance approved for New Zealand

INZ requires comprehensive travel insurance covering the duration of your stay. Southern Cross Travel Insurance and Allianz are commonly used by Nepali students.

Supplementary Financial Evidence

Provide full financial package alongside your visa application

Bank statements3 months' statements from an NRB 'A' class Nepal bank

Must show consistent balance. Include bank reference letter confirming the account holder's relationship with the bank.

Loan documentsEducation loan sanction letter + disbursement schedule

From an NRB-regulated 'A' class bank. Covers tuition + NZD 15,000/year living allowance.

Income proofSponsor's salary certificates or business income documents

Salary slips (3–6 months), employer letter, or business ITR + registration certificate.

PropertyLand/house ownership + valuation

Lalpurja + property valuation in English from a registered valuer.

GovernmentMoEST NOC — MANDATORY for Nepali students

Obtain from MoEST at least 4–6 weeks before departure. Required for the student visa application and for NRB forex remittance.

Post-study work: 1–3 years

Graduates of Level 7+ qualifications at NZ universities can get a Post-Study Work Visa of up to 3 years in Auckland; up to 3 years in other regions. Graduates of Level 8+ can get 3 years anywhere. New Zealand is increasingly popular for Nepali nursing and IT graduates because of this PR pathway.
