Study Education Abroad

4 programmes · 3 countries · BSc/BA, MSc/MA, PhD

Education degrees from abroad serve two very different audiences: Nepali graduates aiming to teach internationally (especially in English-medium schools across Asia and Africa), and educators seeking research/policy careers in development. Both paths are viable and growing.

🇳🇵 For Nepali students

Nepal's education sector pays modestly but a foreign Master's degree dramatically expands options — international schools (Lincoln, Rato Bangala, KISC) and INGOs (Room to Read, World Education) pay 3–5× public school rates. Returning teachers often shift toward curriculum design, teacher training, and education policy.

Why study education abroad?

International qualifications open three pathways: international school teaching (high pay, anywhere from Bangkok to Dubai to Singapore), educational research/policy work at INGOs (Room to Read, World Bank Education, UNESCO), and curriculum/teacher training roles back in Nepal at top private schools and education NGOs.

Compared to other fields, education has shorter ROI horizon when targeting international schools or INGOs. A UK MA TESOL graduate working at an international school in Bangkok earns USD 30,000–50,000+ per year (tax-free in many GCC countries) within 1–2 years of graduation.

Specialisations matter. Generic education degrees offer modest returns; specialisations in TESOL, special needs, educational leadership, education technology, or curriculum design have much stronger labour markets.

Career prospects in education

International school teaching: licensed teachers (PGCE/Master of Teaching holders) earn USD 30–60k tax-free at top international schools in UAE, Saudi Arabia, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam. Top schools (United World College, American School, IB World schools) recruit from PGCE/Master of Teaching graduates globally.

TESOL specialists: teach English as a foreign/second language. Pay varies widely — South Korea, Japan, China, UAE pay USD 25–45k/year for new TESOL Master's grads. Often a 1–3 year stepping stone before moving into curriculum/management.

Educational research and policy: INGOs, World Bank Education, UNESCO, USAID Education programmes. Pay USD 60–100k+ at international levels. Research careers usually require PhD.

Educational technology: a fast-growing sub-field. Roles at edtech companies (Coursera, Duolingo, Byju's, Khan Academy) for education-trained content designers and learning scientists.

Higher education administration: international student services, admissions, curriculum design at universities globally. Master's in Higher Education Administration (NYU, Penn, Boston College) is the standard credential.

Returning to Nepal: top private schools (Lincoln, Rato Bangala, KISC, Ullens) and ed-tech firms recruit returning Master's holders aggressively. Salaries in international schools in Nepal: NPR 150,000–300,000/month — significantly above public schools.

Costs and scholarships

UK Master's in Education: £12,000–20,000/year (1 year). PGCE: £9,250 home / £15,000–20,000 international. UCL IoE around £25,000.

Australia Master's of Teaching: AUD 30,000–45,000/year for 2 years.

USA Master's in Education: $25,000–55,000/year. Top schools (Harvard GSE, Stanford GSE) at $50–60k/year.

Canada: CAD 18,000–35,000/year.

New Zealand: NZD 35,000–45,000 for Master of Teaching.

Scholarships: Chevening (UK, very strong for education applicants), Manaaki NZ, Australia Awards (priority for education), Fulbright FTEA (Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement programme for Nepali teachers).

Choosing the right education programme

If you want to teach internationally: target programmes that lead to a recognised teaching license — UK PGCE, Australia Master of Teaching, NZ Master of Teaching. Avoid generic MA Education programmes if your goal is classroom teaching.

If you want educational research/policy careers: target research-focused Master's at strong faculties — UCL IoE, Harvard GSE, Stanford GSE, Columbia TC, OISE Toronto. Plan for a PhD if research is the long-term goal.

If you want TESOL/EFL teaching: target MA TESOL at Manchester, Warwick, Reading (UK), or Hamline (USA). These give you global mobility to teach English in Asia and the Middle East.

If you want curriculum/teacher training/edtech: MEd or MA in Curriculum & Instruction at strong faculties, especially with edtech specialisation.

Frequently asked questions

Will my UK PGCE allow me to teach in the USA or Australia?
Partially. UK Qualified Teacher Status (QTS, which comes with PGCE) is recognised in Australia and Canada with some bridging. For the USA, you'd need to clear state-specific licensure exams (Praxis II). It is, however, fully recognised at international schools globally — Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok schools all accept UK-trained teachers without further qualification.
Can I get a teaching job in the UK directly after PGCE as a Nepali student?
Yes — many Nepali PGCE graduates secure UK teaching jobs immediately after qualification. The UK has severe teacher shortages, especially in maths, sciences, and computing. Graduate Route visa gives 2 years to work, and shortage-subject teachers are often sponsored on the Health & Care Worker visa route extending stay.
What's the difference between MA TESOL and MA Applied Linguistics?
MA TESOL is more practical and applied — focused on classroom teaching of English. MA Applied Linguistics is more theoretical — focused on language acquisition research, often a stepping stone to PhD. For most Nepali graduates aiming at teaching careers, TESOL is the better choice. For those aiming at academic/research careers, Applied Linguistics opens more doors.
Are there scholarships specifically for Nepali teachers wanting to upgrade qualifications?
Yes — most notably the Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (FTEA) for serving Nepali teachers (semester-long non-degree at US universities), Australia Awards for serving Nepali educators, and the British Council's Hornby Scholarship for English language teachers. The Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development also runs subsidised Master's programmes.
Can I do a PhD in Education in the UK while teaching part-time?
Yes — many UK universities offer part-time PhD options (5–7 years instead of 3–4 years). You can combine this with classroom teaching, especially in schools that value research-active staff. UCL IoE, King's, Manchester, Edinburgh all offer flexible PhD pathways for working teachers.
