Study Law Abroad

8 programmes · 4 countries · BSc/BA, MSc/MA, PhD

Law programmes abroad split sharply by purpose: an LLM is the standard 1-year specialisation for Nepali law graduates, while a JD (USA, Canada, Australia) is a full first law degree taking 3 years. Career outcomes depend heavily on whether you plan to practice abroad, return to Nepal, or work in international law/policy.

🇳🇵 For Nepali students

Nepal Bar Council requires its own enrolment for practising in Nepal, regardless of foreign qualifications. Foreign LLM holders typically return to Nepali law firms (Pioneer, Gandhi, Sinha Verma) at senior associate level, work at INGOs and embassies, or move into international arbitration and corporate law.

Why study law abroad?

A foreign LLM dramatically widens career options for Nepali law graduates. Domestic Nepali law practice is competitive and pays modestly; an LLM from a strong international university opens doors to corporate law firms in Singapore, Dubai, London, and Hong Kong, to UN and World Bank legal counsel positions, and to international arbitration (a fast-growing field with strong demand for South Asian lawyers).

Even if you return to Nepal, a top-50 LLM accelerates promotion to partner/equivalent at firms like Pioneer Law, Gandhi & Associates, and Sinha Verma. Foreign-trained Nepali lawyers also command premium retainers from international clients (banks, mining companies, donors).

However, law is also among the more brand-sensitive overseas fields. Unlike STEM, an LLM from a low-ranked overseas university often delivers minimal return — be ruthless about programme choice.

LLM vs JD vs other law qualifications

LLM (Master of Laws): 1 year. For students who already hold a law degree (BL/LLB from Nepal). Most common choice for Nepali law students. Available worldwide.

JD (Juris Doctor) in USA, Canada, Australia: 3 years. A full first law degree. Suitable for Nepali students who haven't yet done a Nepali LLB and want to practice abroad directly. Requires LSAT (USA, most Canadian schools) — additional barrier.

SJD/JSD (Doctor of Juridical Science): 3–5 year PhD-equivalent. For academic/research law careers. Very specialised.

MCL, MSL, JM: other Master's variants for non-lawyers wanting legal training. Limited career value for Nepali students.

Career prospects in law

International arbitration: hot field, strong demand. Roles at White & Case, Three Crowns, K&L Gates, Dentons. Pay USD 200–500k+ for partners. Strong route for South Asian lawyers since many disputes involve South Asia.

Corporate law at international law firms: Magic Circle (Linklaters, Clifford Chance, Allen & Overy, Freshfields), Silver Circle, US firms in London. Pay £100–200k at qualification; £500k+ for partners. Some hire foreign LLM holders directly.

In-house counsel at multinationals: tech firms (Google, Amazon), banks, energy companies hire international lawyers. Lower pay than law firms but better hours.

INGOs and international organisations: World Bank legal vice presidency, UN Office of Legal Affairs, ICRC, Amnesty, Human Rights Watch. Compensation moderate but mission-driven careers.

Foreign service / diplomacy: Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs hires foreign-trained lawyers for treaty work, ambassadorial positions. Embassy and consular work pay comfortably.

Return to Nepal: top corporate law firms in Kathmandu (Pioneer, Gandhi, KhetiVision, Lex Hub, Sinha Verma) recruit returning LLM holders at senior associate level (NPR 180,000–400,000+/month).

Costs and scholarships

UK LLM: £25,000–45,000 for 1 year. Top LLM (Oxford, Cambridge, LSE) at the higher end.

USA LLM: $55,000–80,000 for 1 year. Harvard, Yale, Stanford LLM around $75k. JD: $65,000–80,000/year × 3 years = $200k+ for tuition alone.

Australia JD or LLM: AUD 35,000–55,000/year. JD is 3 years total.

Canada JD or LLM: CAD 25,000–55,000/year. JD is 3 years.

Germany LLM: EUR 0–25,000/year depending on public vs private. Bucerius Law School around EUR 16,000.

Scholarships: Chevening (UK, well-suited for law), Fulbright FSP (USA), Vanier (Canada PhD), Bucerius LLM Scholarship, NYU Hauser scholarship (highly competitive), Aga Khan ISP. Most top LLM programmes offer 25–50% merit scholarships to strong applicants.

Admissions: LLB/LLM/JD

For LLM: strong Nepal LLB results (first division typically), IELTS 7.0–7.5, statement of purpose explaining specialisation choice, letters from law school faculty + a senior practising lawyer, and at top schools (Oxford, Harvard) a writing sample. Some elite LLMs interview shortlisted candidates.

For JD in USA: LSAT 165+ for top-20 schools (175+ for Harvard/Yale/Stanford). Many Nepali applicants find LSAT exceptionally challenging — plan 4–6 months prep. JD GPA cutoffs typically 3.5+/4.0 for top schools.

For JD in Canada/Australia: LSAT for some Canadian programmes (others use LSAT or alternatives). Australia uses other admissions metrics — Bachelor's GPA + admissions test (LAT/LSAT).

Practising rights: completing a JD or LLM does NOT automatically give you the right to practice law. You must clear a separate bar/admission exam in your target jurisdiction (NY Bar, California Bar, UK SQE, Australian state bar, Canadian Law Society).

Frequently asked questions

Can I practice law in the UK or USA after my LLM?
Not automatically. After a UK LLM, you need to clear the SQE (Solicitors Qualifying Examination) to be a solicitor, or complete Bar Course + pupillage to be a barrister. After a USA LLM, only some states (New York, California, others) allow LLM holders to sit for the bar — and you still need to clear it. The bar exam is challenging for any internationally-trained lawyer; budget 6–9 months prep.
Is an LLM worth doing if I plan to return to Nepal?
Yes — for two reasons. (1) It accelerates promotion at top Nepali law firms (most firm partners now hold foreign LLMs). (2) It opens doors to international arbitration work, INGO legal counsel roles, and treaty/cross-border work that pure Nepali graduates rarely access. Choose an LLM with a specialisation (international commercial, arbitration, intellectual property, climate law) rather than a generic LLM.
Can I do a JD instead of doing the Nepal LLB first?
Yes, but it's expensive and long. A USA JD costs $200k+ over 3 years. If you're a fresh +2 graduate from Nepal with strong English and academics, this is viable — but check whether you can afford it and whether your real goal is practising in the USA (which requires staying through the bar exam and visa challenges). For most Nepali students, Nepal LLB → foreign LLM is more cost-effective.
What's the visa pathway after a law degree in the UK/USA?
UK: Graduate Route gives 2 years of post-study work for LLM holders. To work as a solicitor long-term, you'd need to clear SQE and obtain a Skilled Worker visa sponsorship from a law firm. USA: F-1 OPT gives 12 months for LLM holders (no STEM extension — law is not STEM). Practising as a lawyer requires sponsorship which is hard to get; many LLM holders move to consulting, compliance, or international roles instead.
Are there scholarships specifically for international law students?
Yes — Chevening (UK) explicitly favours public-sector and human rights law candidates from Nepal. NYU's Hauser Scholars and Cambridge's Pegasus Scholarship are top international LLM scholarships. The British Chevening + Inns of Court combined awards are very strong for those targeting barrister careers. Aga Khan ISP supports postgraduate law for need-based candidates.
