Study Nursing & Health Sciences Abroad
46 programmes · 9 countries · BSc/BA, MSc/MA
Nursing is one of the most accessible and high-return career pathways for Nepali students going abroad. Over 52,000 Nepali nurses already work internationally — in the USA (29,000+), Australia (12,900+), UK, Germany, and Norway. A BSc Nursing from the USA, Australia, or UK opens doors to permanent residency, six-figure salaries in NPR terms, and a career that is recession-proof in every country. This guide covers every pathway: studying nursing abroad, professional registration exams (NCLEX, OET), country-specific pathways, and career counselling.
🇳🇵 For Nepali students
Nepal trains thousands of nurses annually — PCL Nursing (3-year diploma) and BN (4-year bachelor) graduates from Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu University, and affiliated colleges. The Nepal Nursing Council has over 115,900 registered nurses, but domestic salaries (NPR 10,000–20,000/month in private hospitals) and limited career advancement are driving over 10,000 nurses per year to seek international opportunities. International nursing is not just a career choice for Nepali nurses — it is an economic lifeline and a path to sending remittances that fund education, housing, and family businesses back home.

Why Study Nursing Abroad? The Nepal-to-Global Opportunity
Nepal produces well-trained nurses — PCL and BN programmes from TU and KU-affiliated colleges cover strong clinical fundamentals. The gap is not training quality but opportunity: Nepal's nurse-to-population ratio and hospital infrastructure cannot absorb the supply. Meanwhile, USA, Australia, UK, Germany, Norway and Canada face critical nursing shortages that won't be resolved domestically.
Salary comparison: Nepali nurse in Nepal NPR 10,000–20,000/month. USA RN USD 93,600/year (NPR ~77 lakh). Australia RN AUD 85,000/year (NPR ~74 lakh). UK NHS Band 5 GBP 29,970/year (NPR ~50 lakh). Germany Pflegefachkraft EUR 42,000/year (NPR ~55 lakh). Norway RNK 613,000/year (NPR ~72 lakh). Studying nursing abroad — or completing licensing exams to work abroad — offers one of the highest ROI career moves available to any Nepali.
The two pathways: (1) Study nursing abroad — complete a BSc Nursing degree in the USA, Australia, UK, or Germany, then get licensed and work there. (2) Work nursing abroad — you already have a PCL/BN from Nepal, complete the licensing exam (NCLEX for USA, AHPRA for Australia, NMC for UK), and migrate directly to work. Both are covered on this platform — navigate using the links on this page.

Exams and Licences: NCLEX, OET, AHPRA, NMC Explained
NCLEX-RN (USA): The national nursing licence exam for all US states. Pass/Fail format, 85–145 questions. No test centre in Nepal — sit in India (Delhi, Mumbai). Cost: USD 200 exam + USD 400–900 CGFNS evaluation. Prep resources: UWorld (highly recommended), Kaplan, local Nepal centres (NPCN, NCLEX Horizon). Pass rate for Nepali nurses with full prep: 80–95% first attempt.
OET (Occupational English Test): Healthcare-specific English exam. Grade B required for AHPRA (Australia) and NMC (UK). Available in Kathmandu. Cost: NPR 38,000. Unlike IELTS, OET uses nurse–patient consultations and clinical scenarios. Better than IELTS for practising nurses with strong clinical English but weaker academic English.
IELTS Academic (English proficiency): Required for most university admissions and professional registration. Australia (AHPRA): 7.0 all bands. UK (NMC): 7.0 all bands. USA (VisaScreen/CGFNS): 6.5. Germany (universities): 6.0–6.5. Available in Kathmandu through British Council Nepal and IDP Nepal.

NMC (UK): Nursing and Midwifery Council. Registration requires CBT (available Kathmandu) + OSCE (UK only). CBT fee: GBP 83. OSCE fee: GBP 794. Annual registration: GBP 120. IELTS 7.0 or OET Grade B required.
Career Outcomes and Salary After Nursing Abroad
Career progression for Nepali nurses abroad follows a well-established ladder. Entry level RN (USA Band 5 equivalent) → Senior RN (2–3 years experience) → Charge Nurse / Team Leader → Nurse Practitioner (NP) / Clinical Nurse Specialist. Nurse Practitioners in the USA earn USD 115,000–160,000/year — among the highest nursing salaries globally. The NP qualification requires an MSN degree (2 years post-BSN).
Specialisations with highest demand and salary: Intensive Care (ICU), Emergency (ED/A&E), Surgical/Theatre, Aged Care (high demand in Australia), Mental Health nursing (UK shortage designation). ICU nurses in Australia earn AUD 95,000–110,000/year. ED nurses in USA earn USD 85,000–110,000/year.
The nursing career abroad also enables remittances that transform Nepali family finances. A Nepali RN in the USA typically remits USD 10,000–20,000/year — equivalent to a generation's earnings in Nepal. Nursing is one of the clearest pathways from a Nepali middle-class family to building wealth across two countries simultaneously.
