New Zealand University Intakes and Application Deadlines for Nepali Students (2026)

New Zealand universities follow a Southern Hemisphere academic calendar, starting in late February or early March. Semester 1 runs approximately February/March to June. Semester 2 runs July/August to November. Most programs admit new international students at the start of Semester 1 (February/March). Semester 2 (July) entry is available for many programs — particularly at postgraduate level — but not all undergraduate programs accept Semester 2 entry.

Semester 1 (February/March) is the main intake and strongly recommended for Nepali undergraduate students. You join a larger cohort of new students, more orientation support is available, and you complete both semesters of Year 1 before the long summer break. Full-year courses (common in science and engineering) are only available from Semester 1. Semester 2 (July) is suitable for graduate programs and for students who missed the Semester 1 deadline.

Semester 2 2026 (July start): Most NZ universities have closed their main deadlines (April–May 2026), but many still accept late applications through June 2026 on a rolling basis — contact your university's international office directly. AUT and Massey typically accept late applicants if places remain. If you are ready now (May 2026), check directly with your target university.

Semester 1 2027 (February start — the main intake): Apply September–October 2026. University of Auckland closes by October 1, 2026 for most programs. VUW, Canterbury, Otago, AUT — October–November 2026. Massey, Waikato, Lincoln — November–December 2026 (rolling admissions). Allow 8–10 weeks after submitting for your Offer of Place, then 8–10 weeks for visa processing — so start no later than September 2026 for a February 2027 start.

Manaaki NZ government scholarship (for Semester 1 2027): applications open March–April 2026 annually. If you missed the 2026 window, the next opportunity is March–April 2027 for Semester 1 2028 entry. University merit scholarships are assessed automatically with your admission application — no separate deadline needed.

May–July 2026 (Now): Research NZ universities and programs. Build a shortlist of 5–8 programs across Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, Otago, AUT, Massey, and Waikato at different selectivity levels. Take IELTS if not done — aim for 6.0–6.5 overall. Apply for Manaaki NZ scholarship if you have not already (window closes April–May each year; next window: March–April 2027).

August–September 2026: Submit university applications for Semester 1 2027 (February start). SNU and top programs close by October — submit early. Pay application fees (NZD 50–100 per university). Request academic reference letters from +2 or bachelor's professors well in advance.

October–November 2026: Receive Offers of Place. Compare tuition, scholarship amounts (University of Auckland Excellence Award, Otago International Excellence Scholarship), and program quality. Accept preferred offer and pay enrollment deposit. Begin NOC application at MoEST Nepal (Sano-Thimi, Bhaktapur) with your Offer of Place.

November–December 2026: Book INZ medical appointment in Kathmandu (B&B Hospital, Norvic, or Grande). Apply for Police Clearance from Nepal Police HQ. Prepare financial evidence: bank statements, education loan sanction letter, or scholarship confirmation. Submit online student visa application at immigration.govt.nz. Pay NZD 330 visa fee. If biometrics required: travel to Delhi VFS Global.

December 2026–January 2027: Receive visa decision (4–8 weeks from complete application). Book flights (Kathmandu–Auckland via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or Doha). Arrange Year 1 accommodation — university halls are strongly recommended for first-year students to build networks.

February 2027: Arrive in NZ. Orientation week at your university. Open NZ bank account (Kiwibank, ANZ, or ASB — bring passport and enrollment proof). Apply for IRD number (tax number) online at ird.govt.nz. Begin Semester 1 2027 classes.

Academic documents: SLC certificate and transcript (from Board of Secondary Education Nepal), NEB +2 transcript and grade sheet (from National Examinations Board). If you completed a bachelor's degree in Nepal, add TU or KU transcripts and degree certificate. Get documents officially stamped by your school or college principal. Some universities request notarized or attested copies — check the specific university requirements.

Language tests: IELTS Academic from British Council Nepal (Kantipath, Kathmandu) or IDP Nepal. Book 2–3 months in advance — popular test dates fill quickly. IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from test date. Take IELTS Academic specifically — not IELTS General Training, which is for immigration not university admissions. Target score: 6.0 minimum, 6.5 to strengthen your application.

Reference letters: most NZ undergraduate applications need 2 academic references. Request from your +2 principal, subject teachers, or bachelor's supervisor. Provide referees with your CV, the program details, and at least 4–6 weeks notice. References should address your academic capability and suitability for your chosen field.

Financial documents: prepare bank statements showing 3–6 months of account history. Avoid large unexplained lump-sum deposits immediately before application — visa officers flag these. Education loan pre-approval letter from your bank if applying for a student loan. Property valuation or title deed if using property as loan collateral.

Semester 1 (February) is the strongly recommended intake for most Nepali students, particularly for undergraduate programs. You join a larger new-student cohort, more orientation programs run in February, both semesters of Year 1 are completed before the long summer break, and all programs — including full-year courses in science and engineering — are available. Apply October–November for a February start.

Semester 2 (July) suits students who: missed the Semester 1 deadline; need more time to improve IELTS scores; are waiting for NEB +2 results published in May–June; or are completing a Nepal bachelor's degree in December. Many postgraduate (master's and PGDip) programs welcome July entry. Apply April–May for a July start.

Foundation programs (pre-degree bridging courses) have their own intake schedules — often two or three intakes per year. If you need a foundation year, the February foundation intake feeds directly into the following February's degree intake. Some foundation programs accept July entry.

Most NZ universities (except Auckland for some competitive programs) use rolling admissions rather than hard cutoff deadlines. If you apply after the stated deadline, your application will still be considered if places remain. Contact the international admissions office directly — explain your situation and ask if late applications are being considered. Auckland has the most strictly enforced deadlines; Massey, Waikato, and AUT are the most flexible.

If Semester 1 is closed, apply for Semester 2 (July). Most programs at postgraduate level accept July entry. Undergraduate programs are more restricted for July start — business, IT, and science usually allow it, but some science and engineering programs are Semester 1 only.

Use any gap productively: improve your IELTS score, complete a relevant online course (Coursera, edX) to strengthen your application, gain work experience, or prepare a stronger Statement of Purpose. A well-prepared application in the next intake is better than a rushed one in the current cycle. A gap year between +2 and university study is not unusual and does not negatively affect your application if you can explain how you used the time.
