About University of Tokyo
The University of Tokyo (often called "Todai") is Japan's top-ranked university and one of the most prestigious in Asia. It offers a growing range of English-taught master's and PhD programs, including the Graduate Program on Environmental Sciences, the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, and several engineering disciplines — all of which are open to international applicants without any Japanese language requirement.
For Nepali applicants, Todai is a top target for the MEXT scholarship route — fully-funded tuition, monthly stipend, round-trip airfare from Nepal, and all administered through the Japanese Embassy in Kathmandu. Even without MEXT, the standardized national university tuition (approximately JPY 535,800 per year, or roughly USD 3,500) makes the overall cost of attendance comparable to a self-financed program in Pokhara — before you factor in part-time work earnings.
Todai's Graduate School of Information Science and Technology is the flagship destination for Nepali CS and engineering master's applicants. The English-taught International Graduate Program on Information Science admits a small international cohort each year — typically 15 to 25 students, half of whom are on MEXT scholarships. Research areas span machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, robotics, and high-performance computing. The department has an active Nepali alumni network that often helps new admits with housing and initial orientation.
Daily life in Tokyo as a Todai student is demanding but rewarding. The main Hongo campus sits in the center of the city, with the Komaba campus (used for undergraduate liberal arts and some graduate programs) in Meguro ward. Student housing is limited; most international graduate students rent private apartments in the wider Bunkyo, Shinjuku, or Itabashi wards, with rent for a small studio running JPY 60,000 to 90,000 per month (USD 400 to 600). Many Nepali students cluster in areas like Shin-Ōkubo and Takadanobaba, which have well-established Nepali restaurants, grocery stores, and community spaces.
The path from admission to arrival is longer than for most Western destinations. After you accept the offer, the university files a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) application with Japanese immigration on your behalf — this takes 6 to 10 weeks. Once the COE arrives by post, you apply for the actual student visa at the Japanese Embassy in Kathmandu, which is usually processed in under a week. Budget at least four months between admission and arrival, and start the MoEST NOC and document attestation process immediately after you receive your offer.
