About Kobe University

Kobe University is a leading national research university in Kobe, Japan's sixth-largest city and one of its most international port cities, ranked QS #601-650 globally (2025). Founded in 1902 as the Kobe Higher Commercial School, the university has maintained particular strengths in economics, business, law, and maritime science — reflecting Kobe's historical role as Japan's most cosmopolitan trade port. Today, Kobe University operates 14 graduate schools across science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, and humanities, with active MEXT scholarship programs for international graduate students.

Kobe city sits between Osaka and Hiroshima on Japan's Shinkansen corridor — 15 minutes from Osaka (Umeda), 30 minutes from Kyoto, and under 3 hours from Tokyo. The Kansai region's concentration of major industry (Panasonic, Sharp, Sumitomo, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Kobe Steel) provides strong industry linkages for engineering and business students. Kobe itself is one of Japan's most visually striking cities — the Rokko Mountains rise directly behind the campus, and the city retains its historic European and Chinese trading district architecture.
