About Keio University

Keio University is Japan's oldest private university, founded by Yukichi Fukuzawa in 1858, and ranked QS #195 globally (2025). Located primarily at its historic Mita campus in Minato, Tokyo, Keio is one of Japan's most prestigious private institutions — the Waseda-Keio rivalry mirrors Oxford-Cambridge in Japanese higher education culture. Keio has particular strengths in economics, law, media and communications, medicine, and science and technology, with a well-established alumni network (keio-kai) spanning Japan's political and corporate establishment.

Keio offers English-medium programs at graduate level, including the Graduate School of Media and Governance, Graduate School of Business Administration (MBA), and the highly regarded Keio SFC (Shonan Fujisawa Campus) programs in policy management and environmental information. Keio's Tokyo location on the Mita campus connects students directly to Roppongi, Shibuya, and Tokyo's financial and media district. As a private university, tuition is higher than national universities, but Keio's brand recognition in Japanese industry is exceptional.
