USA University Intake Dates 2026 — Fall and Spring for Nepali Students

US universities operate on a semester calendar with two main intakes: Fall (August/September) and Spring (January). Fall is the primary intake — it has more available seats, more TA/RA funding positions, more scholarship rounds, and better cohort alignment for full-time degree programs. Spring is a valid secondary option, particularly for master's programs.

As of May 2026, the Fall 2026 application deadlines have passed. Nepali students currently planning their US education should target Spring 2027 (January start, apply September–October 2026) or Fall 2027 (August start, apply December 2026–March 2027). Students already admitted for Fall 2026 should be in their I-20 and visa application phase right now.

If you were admitted to a US university for Fall 2026 (starting August/September 2026) and have received your I-20, your priority now is the F-1 visa application. Timeline for May 2026: Pay SEVIS fee (USD 350) at fmjfee.com → Complete DS-160 at ceac.state.gov → Schedule F-1 visa interview at US Embassy Kathmandu (Maharajgunj) at ustraveldocs.com/np → Attend interview (June–July 2026) → Receive visa (allow 2–4 weeks) → Book flight → Arrive in the US no more than 30 days before program start.

Current F-1 interview wait times at the US Embassy Kathmandu: 4–6 weeks for regular appointments. Expedited appointments are available for documented urgent cases. Apply for your interview slot now — July is the busiest month for F-1 appointments and slots fill quickly. Pay the USD 185 MRV visa application fee at Standard Chartered or Nabil Bank before scheduling.

For Spring 2027 entry (January 2027 start), most university application deadlines fall between September and October 2026. Spring intake is available at most state universities and mid-tier private universities for master's programs. Some PhD programs and many competitive programs are Fall-only — check your target program specifically.

Advantages of Spring 2027: applications open now, less competition than Fall, faster admission decisions. Disadvantages: fewer TA/RA positions, some programs have limited Spring sections, and Spring OPT timelines are slightly misaligned with the H-1B April lottery (Spring graduates' OPT ends in summer, making cap-gap protection shorter). For Nepali students who missed Fall 2026 deadlines, Spring 2027 is the right next target.

After receiving admission: request your I-20 from the Designated School Official (DSO) immediately. I-20 processing takes 2–4 weeks. Once you receive the I-20: pay SEVIS fee (USD 350 at fmjfee.com), complete DS-160 at ceac.state.gov, and schedule the F-1 visa interview at the US Embassy Kathmandu.

For Fall 2027 (starting August 2027), most application deadlines fall between December 2026 and March 2027. PhD programs at top schools (MIT, Stanford, CMU, Berkeley) typically close by December 15, 2026. MS programs at mid-tier state schools often have rolling admissions through February 2027.

Start preparing now (May–September 2026): take GRE and IELTS if you haven't (allow 2–3 months of preparation), research programs and reach out to potential PhD supervisors, build your SOP and gather recommendation letters. Strong applications take 3–4 months to prepare well — do not rush. For Fall 2027, you have time to do it properly.
