Frequently asked questions

Is a German engineering degree recognised in Nepal?
Yes — Germany has reciprocal recognition with Nepal's Ministry of Education for engineering qualifications. You can register with the Nepal Engineering Council after returning. The harder challenge is converting your German qualification to USA or Canada later (PE licensing differs by country) — but for working in Europe or returning to Nepal, German degrees are fully recognised.
Can I switch from civil engineering (Bachelor's) to mechanical or electrical (Master's)?
Partially yes. Many engineering Master's programmes accept students from adjacent engineering disciplines but require you to take 1–3 prerequisite courses in your first semester. Switching from civil to mechanical is common (~30% overlap). Switching to a completely different field (e.g. chemical) usually requires bridge coursework.
Do I need to learn German for engineering programmes in Germany?
For studies: no — there are hundreds of English-taught engineering Master's programmes. For internships and jobs: yes, having at least B1 German opens 4–5× more job opportunities. You can learn during your degree — most universities offer free German for international students.
What is the salary difference between civil engineer in USA vs Nepal?
USA new-graduate civil engineer: USD 65,000–80,000 starting (after taxes ~$48,000–60,000 net). Nepal entry-level civil engineer: NPR 25,000–60,000/month (USD ~2,250–5,400/year). Even after living costs, the difference is roughly 8–10× in disposable income. Returning Nepal-trained engineers from the USA typically take senior roles at NPR 150,000–300,000/month.
Is engineering more competitive than CS for getting student visas?
Generally easier, in fact. Engineering programmes attract fewer applications than CS at most universities and have higher acceptance rates. Visa officers are also typically more comfortable with engineering applicants because the career path is clearer and less suspected of being a backdoor to immigration.
