NCLEX-RN for Nepali Nurses — The 2026 Complete Guide
Why 10,000 Nepali Nurses Attempt NCLEX Every Year
Nepal has over 115,900 registered nurses — and the domestic healthcare system cannot employ them at wages that reflect their training. Private hospitals in Kathmandu pay NPR 10,000–20,000/month. A Nepali RN in the USA earns NPR 60,000–78,000/month net after tax and living costs. That gap drives over 10,000 Nepali nurses out of Nepal every year, with 6,000 alone going to the USA in FY2023–24.
NCLEX-RN is the gateway. Every nurse who wants to work as an RN in the USA — whether trained in Ohio or Kathmandu — must pass this exam. There are no exceptions and no experience-based waivers. The exam is tough for international nurses: 47% first-time pass rate for internationally educated nurses, versus 85%+ for US-educated. But with the right preparation, Nepali nurses are passing at 80–95% on their first attempt.
This guide covers everything: which US state board to choose, how CGFNS credential evaluation works, where to sit the exam near Nepal, exactly what it costs, how to prepare, and what happens after you pass.
Step 1: Choose Your US State Board Strategically
**Texas Board of Nursing (BON)** is the most popular for Nepali nurses. Clear requirements, reasonable processing time (6–10 weeks), no CGFNS Qualifying Exam (just CES evaluation), and Texas has no state income tax — saving USD 5,000–8,000/year versus California. Application fee: USD 75 + USD 38.25. CGFNS CES required: USD 485. Texas has established Nepali nurse communities in Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio.
**New York (NYSED)** is the second most common choice. New York accepts a wider range of international qualifications and processes applications efficiently. Fee: USD 143 + USD 30. CGFNS CES Professional Report required. New York requires both NCLEX and verification of your foreign licence. Downside: NYC has state income tax and high cost of living.
**California BRN**: highest nursing salaries in the USA (USD 120,000+ average RN salary, strong Nurse Practice Act protections) but longest processing time (3–6 months). Best if your employer sponsor is in California — not the right choice if you want to pass quickly and transfer later.
Key point: 41 US states belong to the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC). An RN licence in one compact state is valid in all 41 others without endorsement. If you get licenced in Texas (a compact state), you can practice in any of the other 40 compact states without additional applications. Your initial state board choice is less permanent than it appears.

Step 2: CGFNS Credential Evaluation — What to Submit
CGFNS (Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools) evaluates whether your Nepal nursing education and licence meet US standards. This is mandatory for most US state boards. The specific product required depends on your state board — most require the Credentials Evaluation Service (CES) Professional Report.
Documents to prepare (allow 3–4 months total): (1) Official transcripts from your nursing college — sent directly from the institution to CGFNS, not through you. Ask your nursing college to mail transcripts to CGFNS International, 3600 Market Street, Suite 400, Philadelphia PA 19104, USA. (2) Nepal Nursing Council licence verification — NNC sends verification directly to CGFNS. Submit your request to NNC (Maitighar, Kathmandu) with their official fee and CGFNS verification request form. Allow 6–8 weeks for NNC processing. (3) All documents must be in English — Nepali transcripts require certified English translations.
VisaScreen: If you plan to immigrate on an EB-3 visa, you also need CGFNS VisaScreen separately from CES. VisaScreen additionally requires English proficiency (IELTS 6.5 or OET Grade B). Start both CES and VisaScreen simultaneously to save time.
Step 3: Where Nepali Nurses Sit NCLEX (Near Nepal)
There are no Pearson VUE NCLEX test centres in Nepal. The closest centres are in India. From Kathmandu, the most practical options: **New Delhi** — 1.5 hour direct flight (Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet). 2–3 Pearson VUE centres in Delhi area. **Mumbai** — 2.5–3 hours flying. Multiple Pearson VUE centres. **Bangalore** — 3–4 hours. Popular with South India-based Nepali nurses.
Book your India trip strategically: (1) Get your ATT (Authorization to Test) from Pearson VUE — valid 90 days. (2) Check centre availability at home.pearsonvue.com/nclex. (3) Book flights and hotel first, then book the exam date to match your travel. Popular centres fill 4–6 weeks ahead. (4) Budget NPR 25,000–40,000 for the Delhi trip: return flights NPR 15,000–25,000, hotel 1 night NPR 5,000–10,000, local transport NPR 2,000–4,000.
Alternative: If Indian centres are full within your ATT window, Pearson VUE also has centres in UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi — popular second choice), UK, Australia, and Philippines. A UAE trip costs approximately NPR 80,000–120,000 total but may be necessary if Indian centres are unavailable.

NCLEX Horizon Nepal — intensive classroom coaching, mock exams. The NCLEX Center Kathmandu — flexible schedules for working nurses. National NCLEX — known for a rigorous mock exam programme. Cost NPR 90,000–120,000 — the accountability and structured schedule improve pass rates significantly for nurses who struggle with self-study.

After Passing NCLEX: EB-3 Green Card Pathway
Passing NCLEX and getting your state RN licence finishes the licensing process — but starts the US immigration process. Registered nurses qualify for the EB-3 visa (employment-based permanent residency) under Schedule A shortage occupations, which is exempt from the PERM labour certification normally required.
EB-3 process: (1) Find an employer willing to sponsor your EB-3 petition. Large hospital systems and international nurse placement agencies handle this routinely. (2) Employer files I-140 petition with USCIS. (3) Wait for your priority date to become current — Nepali-born nurses currently wait 1–2 years. (4) Apply for an immigrant visa at US Embassy Kathmandu or adjust status if already in the USA on OPT. (5) Enter the USA as a green card holder.
Recruitment agencies specialising in EB-3 for Nepali nurses: Health Carousel International, Interstaff, Visa Solutions Healthcare (VSH), Wayne Staffing USA. Many employers cover all legal and filing fees. Typical employer-paid benefits: housing allowance in the first month, relocation assistance, sign-on bonus.
