Nurse Salary Comparison: What You Actually Take Home (2026)

All five countries pay far more than Nepal. But gross salary is not what you send home. What matters is what you save after tax and living costs. The exchange rates used throughout this section: USD/NPR 136, AUD/NPR 87, EUR/NPR 130, GBP/NPR 166, NOK/NPR 12. All salaries cited are gross annual figures — net take-home after income tax is lower in every country.

Here is where each country stands: The USA pays the highest gross salary at USD 93,600/year (approximately NPR 1.27 crore/year gross), with Texas nurses keeping the most after tax due to zero state income tax. Australia RNs earn AUD 85,000/year (NPR 73.9 lakh/year gross). Norway pays NOK 613,000/year (NPR 73.6 lakh/year gross) with a high cost of living that reduces take-home. Germany pays EUR 42,000–62,000/year (NPR 54.6 lakh–80.6 lakh/year gross) but social contributions and tax bite hard. UK NHS Band 5 pays GBP 32,000/year (NPR 53.1 lakh/year gross), the lowest of the five in absolute terms.

Monthly savings after tax and typical living costs: USA (Texas) NPR 40,000–54,000. Australia (Queensland) NPR 26,000–45,000. Norway NPR 30,000–36,000. Germany NPR 10,000–20,000. UK NPR 24,000–36,000. These figures reflect what a single nurse living in a shared flat, without dependants, can realistically remit or save each month. Your actual savings will vary based on location, lifestyle, and family situation.

USA — Highest Salary, Best EB-3 Pathway

Average US RN salary: USD 93,600/year (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2025). Geographic variation is large. California RNs average USD 124,000/year. Highest-paying states: California (USD 124k), Hawaii (USD 113k), Massachusetts (USD 98k), Oregon (USD 95k), Washington (USD 95k). Starting RN salary in Texas: USD 60,000–70,000/year. Night shift and weekend premiums add USD 5,000–15,000/year.

After-tax net in Texas (no state income tax): approximately USD 5,500–6,500/month. Living costs: shared 1BR apartment USD 900–1,200, food USD 400–600, transport USD 200–300, health insurance (employer contribution covers 70–80%). Monthly savings potential: USD 3,000–4,000 (NPR 40,000–54,000). Remittance capacity: NPR 20,000–35,000/month while building savings.

Australia — Strong PR, Excellent Quality of Life

Australian public hospital RN salary (NSW, QLD, VIC): AUD 75,000–95,000/year depending on experience and enterprise agreement. Band 3 entry-level RN (0–1 year experience): AUD 67,000/year. Band 3 top step (8+ years): AUD 95,000/year. Aged care: AUD 62,000–75,000/year. Remote area nurses: base AUD 80,000 plus remote allowances AUD 10,000–20,000/year.

After-tax net in Queensland: approximately AUD 4,800–5,800/month. Living costs: rent AUD 1,500–2,200/month (Brisbane; regional cities are cheaper), food AUD 600–800, transport AUD 200–300. Monthly savings: AUD 2,000–3,500 (NPR 26,000–45,000). Key advantage: Australia grants permanent residency through 189/190 skilled migration, so your savings accumulate long-term rather than as a temporary worker remitting home.

Germany — Earn While You Train, Solid Long-Term Stability

German Pflegefachkraft salary under TVöD-P (2026): Grade P7 EUR 3,510/month starting, EUR 4,489/month at top step. Shift premiums (nights, weekends, public holidays) add EUR 300–600/month. Annual gross: EUR 42,000–62,000/year. German tax and social contributions are high — a single nurse takes home approximately EUR 2,100–2,500/month net.

German cost of living: a 1-room flat runs EUR 800–1,200/month in Munich or Hamburg, EUR 500–800 in smaller cities. Food EUR 300–400/month. Health insurance: covered by employer contribution. Transport EUR 80–150/month. Monthly savings: EUR 600–1,200 (NPR 10,000–20,000) — lower than USA or Australia in absolute terms, but you are in a stable EU country with a permanent residency pathway and strong worker protections.

Key Germany advantage: the Pflegeausbildung pathway lets Nepali nurses train in Germany without tuition costs — earning EUR 1,100–1,300/month during the 3-year training. After qualifying, you carry no debt. This is unique among the five countries compared here.

Which Country Should You Choose?

**Maximise salary and remittance: USA.** Highest gross salary, no state income tax in Texas/Florida, large Nepali nurse community, EB-3 green card. Best for nurses who want the maximum financial return quickly.

**Fastest PR plus good salary: Australia.** 189/190 skilled migration is more direct than EB-3. AHPRA registration is well-established. OET available in Kathmandu. Adelaide and Queensland are actively recruiting.

**Earn while you train plus EU stability: Germany.** Pflegeausbildung pays while you train. No tuition debt. Permanent residency after 5 years. EU citizenship pathway. Requires German B2 — a real barrier, but achievable in 12–18 months.

**NHS employment plus Graduate Route visa: UK.** CBT exam available in Kathmandu. Graduate Route gives 2–3 years of work rights immediately after a UK nursing degree. Health and Care Worker Visa is affordable. Good for nurses who want English-language healthcare and NHS career development.

**Best work-life balance: Norway.** Highest quality of life index, generous leave, fixed hours. Requires B2 Norwegian — similar language challenge to Germany. Best for experienced nurses who put life quality above maximum remittance.
