Ireland University Intakes and Application Deadlines for Nepali Students (2026)

Verified 2026-05-12 17:06:36.881601+00🇮🇪Ireland guide
Quick summary

Irish universities have one main intake: September. CAO applications for undergraduate open November 1, close February 1 (Round 1). Postgraduate direct applications: most universities January–April for September entry. Visa applications: allow 6–8 weeks after offer. Start preparing 10–12 months before your target September. MoEST NOC required before visa application.

1

The Irish Academic Calendar

Irish universities operate on a single main annual intake starting in September. The academic year runs September to May, divided into two semesters: Semester 1 (September–January) and Semester 2 (February–May). There is no mid-year (January or February) intake at most Irish universities — September is the only entry point for nearly all undergraduate and most postgraduate programs.

A small number of postgraduate programs offer a January or February intake — particularly professional master's degrees, executive MBA programs, and some research programs. If you need a January start (due to visa delays or other reasons), check individual program pages for flexible entry. In general, plan for September as your target.

Ireland's academic year aligns with the Northern Hemisphere calendar — starting September and ending May, opposite to Australia and New Zealand. This suits Nepali students who complete their NEB +2 in April–June and can use the summer months (June–August) to finalize documents, visa applications, and travel.

CAO: Undergraduate Application System

The Central Applications Office (CAO) at cao.ie processes undergraduate applications to Irish universities and colleges. CAO opens for applications on November 1 each year. Round 1 deadline: February 1 (lower application fee, around €30). Round 2 deadline: May 1 (higher fee, around €45). International students from outside the EU/EEA apply through the CAO system or directly — check whether your target university uses CAO or direct applications for international students.

Some Irish universities (particularly Technological Universities) handle international student applications directly through their own online portals rather than through CAO. Contact each university's international admissions office to confirm the correct application channel. Direct applications to universities typically open in September–October and can be submitted until March–April.

CAO application process: create an account at cao.ie, list your chosen programs in order of preference (up to 10 courses each at Level 8 and Level 7), upload supporting documents (transcripts, IELTS scores, personal statement), and pay the application fee. Offers are issued in rounds — Round A (early, February) and Round 1 (August). International students typically receive offers during the same rounds as domestic applicants.

3

Postgraduate (Master's / PhD) Deadlines

Postgraduate applications in Ireland go directly to each university through their online portals — there is no central system like CAO for master's programs. Most universities open postgraduate applications in October–November for the following September intake. Rolling admissions are common — apply early for competitive programs as places fill on a first-come, first-served basis.

Key deadlines for September 2027 postgraduate entry: Trinity College Dublin — February–March 2027 for most master's programs; some popular programs close earlier. UCD — applications open year-round with program-specific deadlines, most by February–April 2027. UCC, University of Galway — rolling, apply by March–April 2027. Technological Universities — rolling, often no hard deadline but apply by April–May.

Research PhD applications: contact potential supervisors directly 6–12 months before intended start. Irish research councils (Irish Research Council, Science Foundation Ireland) fund PhD studentships — funded positions are advertised on irishresearch.ie and university websites. Applications for funded positions open October–January for a September start.

Key Documents Timeline Before Applying

Academic documents: NEB SLC and +2 certificates and transcripts from the National Examinations Board Nepal. If you completed a bachelor's degree, add TU or KU transcripts and degree certificate. Get documents officially certified — Irish universities typically accept Nepali original documents or certified copies; some may request notarized translations.

Language tests: IELTS Academic from British Council Nepal (Kantipath) or IDP Nepal. Book 2–3 months in advance. Scores valid 2 years. Target IELTS 6.0 minimum; 6.5 for Trinity College and competitive programs. TOEFL iBT 79+ or PTE Academic 52+ are also accepted. Take the IELTS Academic test, not General Training.

Personal statement / motivation letter: 500–800 words explaining your chosen program, relevant academic and personal background, career plans in Ireland and how they connect to your future in Nepal. Reference specific aspects of the program (research groups, modules, faculty) to demonstrate genuine interest. Generic statements are less competitive.

References: 2 academic references from +2 teachers or bachelor's supervisors. Request references 6–8 weeks before applying. Give your referees your CV, the program details, and a brief summary of your background. References are submitted directly by referees through the university's online portal.

5

Visa Timeline: From Offer to Arrival

Irish student visa (Study Visa) applications are submitted online through VFS Global in Kathmandu. Visa fee: €60. Processing time: 4–8 weeks typically. Apply as soon as you have your university offer letter, financial evidence, and other documents ready — do not wait until 2 weeks before your start date.

Full timeline from application to arrival: university application (October–November 2026 for September 2027) → offer received (January–April 2027) → apply for MoEST NOC (2–4 weeks) → apply for Irish student visa via VFS Kathmandu (4–8 weeks processing) → arrange flights and accommodation (book at least 6–8 weeks before start). Total lead time needed: 8–12 months from start of application to arrival.

Tuition payment: many Irish universities require first-semester or full first-year tuition paid before they issue your enrollment confirmation and student ID. You cannot register at the university and start classes until tuition is paid. Plan your NRB foreign exchange approval and international wire transfer at least 4–6 weeks before your start date.

What to Do If You Miss the September Deadline

If you miss the CAO February Round 1 deadline, you can still apply through Round 2 (May 1) at a higher fee — offers are still made in August if places remain. For direct university applications, most Irish universities accept international applications on a rolling basis until April–May for September entry. Contact the international admissions office directly — if the program still has places, late applications are often considered.

A one-year gap while strengthening your application is common and not viewed negatively by Irish universities. Use the gap productively: improve IELTS (retake if needed), complete a relevant online qualification (Coursera, edX), gain work experience, or do a pre-university English program. A stronger application in the next cycle is better than a weak application accepted now.

January entry option: a handful of Irish postgraduate programs (some master's degrees, professional programs) accept January entry. If your September 2027 application is unsuccessful or your visa arrives late, contact admissions offices about January 2027 entry as a fallback option. This is less common for undergraduate programs.
