Canada University Intakes and Application Deadlines for Nepali Students (2026–2027)
Canadian universities offer two main intakes: Fall (September, the primary season) and Winter (January). Fall intake has the most programs and scholarship options. As of May 2026, Fall 2026 entry has passed — the active planning targets are Fall 2027 (apply September 2026–February 2027) and Winter 2027 (applications due June–September 2026). The PAL requirement adds 2–6 weeks to your overall timeline — account for this when planning.
Canada's Two Main Intakes
Canadian universities operate on a September–April academic year with two primary entry points: Fall (September–October) and Winter (January–February). Fall is the main intake — the majority of undergraduate programs, most graduate programs, and essentially all scholarship competitions are tied to Fall entry. Winter intake is available for many postgraduate programs and some undergraduate programs, but with fewer program options and no scholarship competitions.
Some universities — particularly colleges and polytechnics — also offer a May/Summer intake for certain programs. This third intake is typically for continuing students or certificate programs rather than degree-level entry. Do not plan your primary application strategy around the summer intake unless your specific program clearly offers it for new international students.
The PAL (Provincial Attestation Letter) requirement introduced in January 2024 has added a new step to the intake timeline. The PAL must be obtained before submitting your study permit application, and PAL processing takes 2–6 weeks depending on the province. Factor this into your application calendar — it effectively means you need to accept your offer 2–6 weeks earlier than before to maintain the same overall timeline.
Fall 2027 Intake (September): Timeline and Deadlines
For Fall 2027 (September entry), university application windows open in August–October 2026. Competitive programs at the University of Toronto, UBC, and Waterloo close applications as early as November 2026 for Fall 2027. Most mid-tier universities have deadlines between December 2026 and February 2027. Many universities with rolling admissions accept applications through March–April 2027, though scholarship consideration diminishes after February.
Planning backward from an August 2027 arrival: you need your study permit by July 2027, which means submitting the SDS application by early June 2027, which means having your PAL by late May 2027, which means accepting your offer by April 2027, which means applying to universities by October 2026–February 2027. Begin IELTS preparation now if you do not yet have a qualifying score — test slots in Nepal fill quickly around peak application seasons (September–October 2026).
Students who missed the Fall 2026 application windows should target either Winter 2027 (January — applications due now, June–September 2026) or Fall 2027 (apply from October 2026 onward). Winter 2027 is viable for most postgraduate programs and requires a study permit submission by October–November 2026 for SDS processing.
Winter 2027 Intake (January): When It Makes Sense
For Winter 2027 (January entry), application deadlines are typically June–September 2026. Winter intake is genuinely suitable for postgraduate students who need more time to complete their bachelor's degree, improve their IELTS score, or accumulate work experience. It is less common for undergraduate entry — many first-year undergraduate courses have prerequisites or structures that assume September entry.
From an immigration perspective, Winter intake has one important consideration: the PGWP clock starts when you graduate, not when you enter Canada. A student who enters in January 2027 and completes a 2-year master's program will graduate in December 2028 — the same PGWP duration as a September 2026 entrant graduating in April 2028. The 4–5 month difference in Canadian entry timing does not significantly affect the PGWP outcome.
For study permit purposes, Winter 2027 applicants need to submit their PAL request and study permit application by October–November 2026. SDS applicants will receive their permit within 20 working days, giving comfortable time for a January 2027 arrival. Accommodation is often easier to arrange for Winter intake since the September rush is over — many student housing options that are fully booked in September have vacancies in January.
12-Month Action Plan for Fall 2027
May–August 2026: Research programs and build your shortlist (8–12 universities spanning affordable options like Memorial/Manitoba and competitive ones like Waterloo/UBC). Take or retake IELTS — aim for 6.0 in all four bands for SDS eligibility. If targeting Winter 2027, submit applications now — deadlines are June–September 2026.
September–November 2026: Submit Fall 2027 university applications. Competitive programs at Waterloo and UBC close as early as November 2026 — do not delay. Complete your Statement of Purpose for each application. Pay application fees (CAD 100–200 per university). Apply to 8–12 institutions.
December 2026–February 2027: Receive early admission decisions. Compare offers. Accept your preferred offer and pay the enrollment deposit. Immediately ask your DLI to initiate your PAL application. Begin the GIC process with your chosen Canadian bank. Wire first-year tuition to the university (required for SDS).
March–May 2027: Receive PAL from your province (allow 2–6 weeks). Receive GIC certificate from your Canadian bank. Submit your SDS study permit application through IRCC online. Submit biometrics at VFS Global Kathmandu within 30 days of your biometrics instruction letter. Receive your study permit approval within ~20 working days.
June–August 2027: Book flights (round-trip — Canadian study permits require proof of intent to return). Arrange accommodation (student residence or private rental — book early for Toronto and Vancouver). Exchange NPR to CAD at your Nepali bank for initial settlement funds (CAD 2,000–3,000). Arrive in Canada 2 weeks before orientation (typically mid-August to early September).
After You Apply: Decisions, Conditions, and Acceptance
Canadian university admission decisions come in three forms: direct admission (no conditions), conditional admission (conditions such as submitting final transcripts or improving your IELTS), and refusal. Conditional admission is common — you accept the offer, pay the deposit, and the condition is lifted once you fulfill it (e.g. submitting your Class 12 final marks after the exam). Read your offer letter carefully to understand any conditions and their deadlines.
The enrollment deposit is typically CAD 500–2,000, credited toward your first semester tuition. It is non-refundable in most cases — only accept an offer if you are genuinely committed to attending. Once you pay the deposit, the university begins the PAL process. Do not pay deposits to multiple universities simultaneously — accept one offer and decline others as soon as you decide.
Canadian universities provide detailed post-acceptance checklists — housing applications, health insurance enrollment, student ID setup, etc. Follow these systematically. Submit your housing application immediately after accepting your offer — student residence spots fill quickly, especially at competitive universities in expensive cities. Private rental in Canada can be applied for from Nepal via platforms like Rentals.ca, Kijiji, or Facebook Marketplace groups specific to Nepali students at your university.

Frequently asked questions
What is the earliest I can apply to a Canadian university for Fall 2026?
Most Canadian universities open their Fall 2026 applications in September–October 2025. Applying as early as possible — November or December 2025 — gives you priority consideration for limited-enrollment programs and scholarship competitions. The University of Toronto, UBC, and Waterloo have application deadlines as early as November 2025 for some programs.
How long does the PAL take to get?
PAL processing times vary by province. Ontario typically processes PALs within 2–4 weeks for students whose DLI applies on their behalf. British Columbia and Quebec can be similar. Some provinces with smaller international student volumes (Manitoba, New Brunswick) can process faster. The overall range is 2–6 weeks. Your DLI should be able to give you an estimate based on current volumes.
Can I change my intake from Winter to Fall after submitting a study permit?
If you have a Winter study permit but want to defer to Fall, you need to request a deferral from your university. If the university agrees, they issue a new acceptance letter reflecting the new start date, and you may need to apply for a new or amended study permit. This is administratively possible but adds time and fees. Better to plan your intake carefully from the start.
What if my IELTS score is good but I cannot pay the full tuition upfront for SDS?
Apply through the regular stream instead of SDS. The regular stream does not require upfront full tuition payment — you need to show sufficient financial resources (bank statements, loan letters, etc.) but you do not need to have paid the tuition already. Regular stream processing takes longer (8–16+ weeks), so apply earlier to compensate for the longer wait.
Is September the only main intake or can I start at other times?
September is the primary intake, but January (Winter) is a legitimate and common secondary option for most postgraduate programs. May/Summer intake exists at some colleges and polytechnics for specific programs. Most universities do not offer undergraduate Summer intake for new international students. Always verify on your specific program's intake dates — do not assume.
